New York City: On May 1, 2018, Council Member Peter Koo and Senator Toby Ann Stavisky announced that May would be designated as Union Street Beauty Month in Flushing, NY. In recognition of the event, the Asian American Federation has partnered with Union Street small businesses to provide affordable prices and services for the New York City community, particularly for the upcoming Mother’s Day. For this event, cosmetic shops, hair salons, and skin care shops are providing special discounts, giveaways, and more. Participating stores are located on Union Street between Roosevelt Avenue and Northern Boulevard.

Jo-Ann Yoo, executive director of the Asian American Federation, said, “Many Asian-owned small businesses have been impacted dramatically by the gentrification of downtown Flushing. However, by featuring Union Street businesses during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, we are able to highlight the allure and uniqueness of these businesses that occupy a historic shopping corridor.”

Council Member Peter Koo said, “Flushing is already a top dining destination for New Yorkers, but designating May as Union Street Beauty Month allows our local businesses to showcase our other hidden gems. From hair salons to Asian beauty products, Union Street has a great sampling of everything our community has to offer. Union Street Beauty Month is a great opportunity for people from across every community to peruse the diverse goods on Union Street and take part in a real ‘Flushing experience.’”

Senator Toby Ann Stavisky said, “Union Street Beauty Month is a terrific opportunity for people around the community and around the city to take advantage of the robust small business community here in Flushing. Unfortunately, so many people turn to big box stores or online shopping to purchase beauty and cosmetic products. It is vital to support small businesses in Flushing, and I urge everyone to pay a visit to the merchants on Union Street to see the wonderful products they have.”
