Filing a New Claim
Unemployment Insurance Benefits Online
If you apply for Unemployment Insurance Benefits today, your claim will be effective XX/XX/XX. If you worked or will work four or more days or earn more than $504.00 gross pay between XX/X/XX-XX/XX/XX, you cannot file your claim at this time. You must wait until next Monday, X/XX/XX, in order to file if you are still unemployed.
What information will I need to file a claim?
To complete the online application, you will need the following information:
-Valid New York State drivers’s license or Non-Driver Photo Identification card number(if you have either one)
-Your complete mailing address and zip code
-Telephone number where we can contact you between 8 am and 5 pm Monday through Friday
-Employer Registration number or Federal Employer Identification Number(FEIN) of your most recent employer (FEIN may be found on your W-2 forms), if you have it.
-Complete name, address, zip code and phone number of your most recent employer
-Alien Registration card number (if you are not a U.S. Citizen)
-If you are unable to print, have an pen and paper available to write down important information
-If you choose to have direct deposit of your weekly benefits, you must have a check handy in order to enter your bank routing and checking account numbers
If you have not worked in New York State in the last 18 months, but worked in one or more state other than NYS, you may be able to establish a claim with one of the state which you worked. If you have not worked in New York State in the last 18 months, but have worked in two or more states, you may be able to establish a combined wage claim with any of the states in which you worked. Your wages will be combined and your benefits will be calculated under the law of the state in which you file your combined wage claim. This may increase your benefit amount. You should know that state unemployment laws. weekly benefit amounts, and eligibility requirements vary between the states.

Provide Complete and Accurate Information
-If you give us incomplete or incorrect information, your claim and any payments that may be due to you could be delayed.
-If you give us false information or withhold information, your future benefits will be lost or reduced and you may face other serious consequences including the possibility of prosecution.
Submit your Claim
Not all Unemployment Insurance applications may be completed online. If you see a confirmation page that says you must speak with a claims specialist to complete your application for benefits. you may be required to call the Telephone Claims Center or a representative may contact you. However, your claim will not be processed until you speak with a telephone claim representative.
Keep Your Contact Information Current
By signing up for an on-line account, you agree to keep the contact information you have given us up to date. Required information includes your mailing address, email address, and phone number. If your contact information changes, you agree to update that information for our records.
Respond to All Department Requests
You agree to check and respond to messages and questionnaires we may send to you through the NY.gov secure message system and all messages, forms and letters we send you by mail. You must respond within the timeframes listed in those documents. You acknowledge and understand that if you fail to:
-keep our contact information up-to-date.
-check your NY.gov secure message inbox.
-and/or respond to our communications within the timeframes listed in those document, your benefits may be delayed, suspended or denied.
-Please note: If you receive benefits that we determine you were not eligible for, you may be required to repay some or all of these benefits.
-You may be required to call the Telephone Claims Center or a representative may contact you. However, your claim will not be processed until you speak with a telephone claim representative. Our agent will tell you the type of claim and the date that you filed. If this information is not provided please do not share any information. It is necessary to call to complete your initial claim.
Keep Your PIN Secure

When you submit a claim, you will be promoted to create a PIN. Your PIN is your electronic signature. You will use your PIN every time you access the claims processing system. You could lose up to 20 weeks of benefits if you allow another person to use your PIN. If you are a person with a disability who is unable to access our services without the help of another person, you may allow another person to help you. However, you must be present each time your help uses our services, including when you’re helper enters your PIN. You are responsible for the actions of your helper. You may be subject to penalties, including forfeiture of benefits, if you and not present when your helper accesses our services.
